The event, organized by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), a partnership between 1,500 companies, organizations, and institutions from more than 80 countries. GWEC has also been influential at the COP, an international conference to discuss global warming countermeasures.<\/p>\n<p id=\"28ee\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph vr vs qt vt b vu vv vw vx vy vz wa wb wc wd we wf wg wh wi wj wk wl wm wn wo gb bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Among renewable energies, offshore wind power has great potential. Especially the land in Hokkaido accounts for about 29% of the nation\u2019s total potential for offshore wind turbine development (fixed foundation and floating). In this article, we will discuss wind power generation in Hokkaido from the perspective of global and Japanese energy projects.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"79cc\" class=\"wp wq qt bf wr me ws mf mh mi wt mj ml ja wu jb je mo wv mp ms mt ww mu mx wx bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Global Energy Landscape<\/h1>\n<figure class=\"xo xp xq xr xs vl vd ve paragraph-image\">\n<div class=\"vm vn dq vo bh vp\" role=\"button\">\n<div class=\"vd ve aos\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"bh uk vq c\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize:fit:1400\/0*wAjsvyXYV6fEC9RB\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"c4b3\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph vr vs qt vt b vu vv vw vx vy vz wa wb wc wd we wf wg wh wi wj wk wl wm wn wo gb bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The majority of global greenhouse gas emissions stem from the energy and industrial sectors, contributing 58% of the world\u2019s greenhouse gas emission in 2019. To limit global warming to 1.5\u00b0C above pre-industrial levels, it\u2019s crucial to triple the world\u2019s renewable energy capacity by 2030. Specifically, wind energy must increase its annual deployment by 3\u20134 times over the next decade. For instance, in the UK and Germany, it accounts for over 20% of total energy production. However, in Japan even thought 19.8% of total energy production is renewable, wind power only makes up 0.9%, which is significantly lower even when compared to EU\u2019s 15.4% and the USA\u2019s 8.1%. The goal is to increase this to 5% by 2030, primarily through offshore wind development.<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"12ad\" class=\"wp wq qt bf wr me ws mf mh mi wt mj ml ja wu jb je mo wv mp ms mt ww mu mx wx bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Hokkaido\u2019s Commitment to Wind Energy<\/h1>\n<figure class=\"xo xp xq xr xs vl vd ve paragraph-image\">\n<div class=\"vm vn dq vo bh vp\" role=\"button\">\n<div class=\"vd ve aox\">\n<div style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"bh uk vq c\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/v2\/resize:fit:1400\/0*57rOpa6Z0J8HF7Uy\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"499\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Five \u201cpromising areas\u201d selected by the government<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"aip fa aiq vd ve air ais bf b bg z ds\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"94e7\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph vr vs qt vt b vu vv vw vx vy vz wa wb wc wd we wf wg wh wi wj wk wl wm wn wo gb bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Hokkaido was chosen in May 2023 by the Goverment as having five offshore areas with high potential for wind development. The 5 offshore locations are near the cities of Ishikari, Iwanai, Shimamaki, Hiyama, Matsumae. All of the areas are located on the Sea of Japan side of Hokkaido, and a total of 15 offshore wind power generation projects will be carried out in the five areas.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f2b0\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph vr vs qt vt b vu vv vw vx vy vz wa wb wc wd we wf wg wh wi wj wk wl wm wn wo gb bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">One example is the wind turbine operation that kicked off on January 1, 2024, at Ishikari Bay New Port. With 14 wind turbines, each towering at 196 meters, this farm can energize about 83,000 average households twice the output of a typical wind turbine in Japan. Although one of the largest operating wind farms in Japan, this project is just scratching the surface, representing a mere 3% of the maximum potential which is projected to be 3.855 million kW output after all turbines are installed in the five regions<\/p>\n<h1 id=\"f379\" class=\"wp wq qt bf wr me ws mf mh mi wt mj ml ja wu jb je mo wv mp ms mt ww mu mx wx bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Opportunities and the Future<\/h1>\n<p id=\"af2b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph vr vs qt vt b vu wy vw vx vy wz wa wb wc xa we wf wg xb wi wj wk xc wm wn wo gb bk\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Hokkaido\u2019s renewable energy scene is gearing up, and with it comes a opportunities for startups, investors, and corporations.
